10 Questions with Teacher Simon Furness.
Each week we’ll be asking a member of The Actors’ Temple Community 10 questions about their experiences, life and thoughts on acting.
This week we speak to Temple teacher Simon Furness. Simon started teaching in 1999 following a decade of experience as a stage and screen actor. Simon’s teaching style is consistent and progressive, offering each student the chance to experience the entire depth and range of The Actors’ Temple approach.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Curious, passionate and impatient
Why did you choose to become an actor?
To stop the bullies laughing. To meet girls in nice clothes.
Most challenging role/ situation and why?
Being a parent.
Who inspires you?
Michael Caine. No one gave him a chance as an actor.
What brought you to The Actors’ Temple?
I was invited to teach here by Mark Wakeling and my teacher Tom Radcliffe who trained with Sanford Meisner. I’m still here after 18 years!
If you could play any character- who would it be and why?
Colonel Vershinin in Chekhov’s Three Sisters? He makes poetry out of despair.
If you weren’t an actor, what alternate career would you have?
Most actors have an unintended but alternative career - teaching acting is mine. I’m living the alternate career now! That’s what the universe has sent me.
What motivates you?
Heroic deeds in the face of insurmountable odds
If you could write a letter to your younger self, what would you say?
Be kind to yourself, then you won’t be so hard on others.
