NEW for 2011: 16 Week Training

Posted on July 29, 2010 by Mark Wakeling

January 2011 will mark the start of our best course yet…6 month training.

In just 16 weeks we promise you a more enjoyable, thorough, powerful and useful acting training than many drama schools can give you in 3 years.

January 2011 sees the launch of our 16 Week full actor training.  Unlike traditional drama schools our training is absolutely specific and deals directly with getting actors to work in the most truthful way possible.  This allows us to achieve real and life changing results in a relatively short period of time, allowing you to get on with your career quickly and powerfully.

Course structure: The acting work of the 16 week course is split into two main phases:

1.    Acting phase one: (8 weeks)

Basic exercises leading to complex improvisation.  This work opens you up to the things that ‘get in the way’ of your ability to honestly relate to yourself and others.  A gradual progression of exercises which develop in complexity and expand the ability to live truthfully in any given imaginary situation.  This will be followed by one week's rest for all.

2.    Acting phase two: (8 weeks)

Will focus on how to take all you have learned so far and apply it to text starting with solo work - (more commonly known as ‘monologues’) through to full scenes.

Movement Work

In researching and designing an appropriate movement course for Actors, we wanted to expose the students to an activity that would not only allow the student to get in tune with themselves physically, but to also create an environment where they could explore the expression of the acting principles that they are learning in class through a physical activity.

Since one of the fundamental principles of Sandfod Meisner’s acting philosophy centers around “jumping in” to any dramatic or emotional conflict rather than “backing away from it”, we felt that the best way to explore the craft of acting physically is through the study of an appropriate martial art or sport, that will expose the student to the area of ‘conflict’ in a physical situation.

We have found that the principles of Gracie Jiu Jitsu (GJJ) match almost identically to these principles of acting. As a result this will be an excellent compliment to the acting students’ training.

GJJ is the worlds most effective self-defense system, and the only one designed specifically so that a small person can defeat a larger, heavier and more athletic opponent. The way this is achieved is through relying on principles of relaxation, timing, energy efficiency, sensitivity, and technique. It does not rely on strength, speed, aggression, explosiveness or flexibility. And since none of the techniques rely on the need to strike, anybody, regardless of age, athletic ability or gender, can practice Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

Through the study of GJJ techniques, the student will learn:

    * To develop comfort in a conflict situation

    * To be comfortable with close contact

    * To work off their partner’s behaviour, rather than ‘forcing’ or ‘manipulating’ the situation

    * The ability to respond instinctively to any situation.

    * To be able to ‘improvise’ in a physical situation.

On top of all this the student will enjoy the other benefits of increased fitness and flexibility, the ability to defend themselves, and most importantly, a feeling of empowerment, confidence and well-being.

Weekly Timetable

There will be three courses running concurrently: Mornings from 930-1.30pm, Afternoons from 1.45-5.45pm, and Evenings 6.00–10.00pm.  Students will stay in the same time slot and with the same teacher for the duration of the course.

In addition to this there will be two, hour long ‘movement’ sessions per week on Monday’s and Thursday’s.  For the morning acting class this will be from 2–3pm, the afternoon acting class 6.30–7.30pm and for the evening acting class 4.30–5.30pm.  On the first Saturday there will be an in-depth introduction to the Movement work.
